Research Requests

Requests should be presented in writing either by letter or by E-mail. They must be specific as possible with names, locations, and dates. Simple requests must include self addressed stamped envelopes. If requests require copying of material, the requester is advised the cost of copying and postage. Upon receipt of the remittance, copies will be mailed to the specified home address. If requests are more than we can expect of our volunteers, a list of local professional genealogists is available.

How to write a good query for information:
  • Do not be vague in your requests
  • At a minimum give the county and time frame
  • Tell us as much as you know and what details you are seeking
Examples of queries we CAN answer:
  • Can you look up an obituary in the Danville newspaper for John Jones who died April 14, 1940?
  • Can you check the vertical files and family histories for Bob Davis who lived in Halifax County, Virginia in 1870?
  • Can you look up a marriage for Mary Scott and Bud Baker in Caswell County, NC around 1850?
  • Do you have a listing in your cemetery records for John Wooding who died in Danville between 1905 and 1910?
Examples of queries we CANNOT answer:
  • Do you have a marriage for John Wilson and Mary Cunningham?
(Non specific no county or time frame)
  • Do you have a burial for Paul Reed in Mecklenburg County, NC
(We only research the seven counties we cover which are Pittsylvania, Halifax, Henry and Franklin in Virginia and Caswell, Rockingham and Person in North Carolina)
